Art History Connection Piece -- In Progress

My art history piece won't be done in time for the end of the semester. Although, I will share bits and pieces of it from along the way.

My final product will hopefully take shape as a short film, around 5-10 minutes long, and broken down into three different phases: What I've learned from the world, what I see, and what I hope to put into it.

I want to do so without using any of my words. Maybe a few snippets of old speakers or quotes that I like, but mostly music and visuals. An impressionistic way to convey my message.

But since the film won't be done, my portfolio/art history piece will contain images from along the way. Trying to capture the emotion through color, shape, movement, and just emotion from my friends.

I think when you really put an energy into your work, people will feel it, in however unique way it gets to them......

Art History Connection Brainstorm

- What movements are you inspired by?
Impressionism. This is an artistic style that was more about the feeling and experience, than an accurate representation. I think the style represents more of what we see. Our eyes have a very shallow depth of field, so nothing but what we are focusing on is in focus. The same goes for this style as the things surrounding the subject are often long visual strokes or purposeful inaccuracies.
The style is also very representative.  When I bring impressionism into my film, its not always the accurate representation of what happened, but certain film sequences are compiled to express the feeling/energy behind it
- What artists are you inspired by?
Bo Bartlett - Painter
Nick Lavecchia - Photography
Morgan Maassen - Film
Casey Neistat - Film

- What materials will you need?
Sony a6000
Dye + water
Wetsuit, underwater housing
Go pro hero

- What spaces or models will you need?
Friends
Ocean and Surfboard
Mountain and Snowboard
Ice pond

- How much time will you need? (If your piece will be quick to create you should work in a series, or make several pieces.)
Photography -- Just a few hours to shoot a few separate places, then a couple hours to edit

Film-- This full project will take months...I need a seasonal effect so I'm stacking up on film. For the portfolio I'll have a short edit/teaser

Artist Statement Brainstorming

ARTIST STATEMENT BRAINSTORM
(step two'ish)

*To me, art is expression. It's expression of an idea through any form of media or material. Whatever it may be, it doesn't matter. But I've come to see that a piece without a charge, a personality, or an idea, is just the material. Its empty until you put a you into it. It becomes art when that charge is added. When a piece of the person is ingrained. An artists ability is unconsciously determined by there ability to convey that energy and idea.
*I try to be honest with my art. I'm in a real developing period. Our work can always improve, but its that energy that I put into my work that's also coming together, the me I put into it. But at the moment it's what I've been trying to convey. The beauty in the struggle. The order in the chaos. The truth and happiness behind the fear and scale. That's my idea of expression. Whatever art I choose to apply it to. What needs fine tuning is my conveying of it. Getting the right light and color into my work is often my greatest frustration. Getting what I see and what I feel purposefully into my work, is the hardest thing. That's the part that's going to take my repetitive work. Sometimes with the drop of the shutter, a flow in my films, or my movement in a game of soccer, that expression is conveyed. Its our consistency that determines our success in outcome.

My forms: Film, photography, and soccer.

(Step one): Word flow of my ART
- Originality, soulful exploration, curious, drive, isolation, sadness, full, balanced in the chaos, style...

WORDS (step 5ish)
ineffable - to great or extreme to be described in words
momentum
effervescent - full of life
Qi (chi)

Step 6:  Fill in these sentences.
When I work with water I am reminded of an appreciation for what is.
I begin an artwork/photograph/series by looking for a way of living within myself.
I know a piece is done when I see somebody feel that energy/idea I put into it.
When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of reassurance.
When people see my work, I'd like them to look deeper.

What is Thanksgiving

What is your Thanksgiving like? Is it bliss?  Is it torture? What does it mean to you?  What is the root of the holiday?  Does your family travel...stay in York?  What are your rituals?
-My thanksgivings have always been about family. This year I had two thanksgivings. One with my real family: grandparents, parents, aunts-uncles, cousins, etc...

The other was with my soccer family. 30 other teenagers just like me. The day after actual thanksgiving we take off on a plane to our national showcase. We've traveled around this time for three years consecutively now, and have stayed in the same hotel that sponsors our club. Here's a few images that capture what my family and I see. It's warmth in the wake of winter (Sarasota, FL).
