Robert Adams Reflection

  • How does his work relate to ecology? Ecology is the relationship between organisms and the environment around them. He shows how the west used to be, and how much its developed as the people moved out there.
  • What is his process?  His pictures are often very simple, yet have plenty of meaning behind them. The lighting is peaceful, yet the meaning behind it maybe not so much.
  • What is his inspiration? The west, and the people out there.
  • What is his concept? Pick 2 images from his website to go along with your answer.

Quarter One Reflection

                                                                   PHOTO ONE

            Reflection:
RE5 - Personal Practice -
Art practice to me is all about perspective. Art is the expression of life, and how you choose to express it is your art. For me, I was raised in nature. In the sea, in the mountains, and in the new England forests. So its where the root of my art exists. I'm creative through my relationship with nature. Whether it's surfing, snowboarding, long boarding, playing soccer, or doing whatever. Whenever I try and capture the moment in photography, I try and show more of the experience than the setting. Although it may seem like just a landscape or just a surfer, there's usually something behind it.
                                                        Grade - 4
           Developing craft:
DC2 - Media literacy -
During this quarter I feel like I've definitely honed in my composition tool skills. Just having the ability to use color, contrast, lines, and symmetry to take the viewers eyes throughout the image. In my work I could refine and edit my photos more to eliminate unneeded objects and distractions. Sometimes there's a message or experience im trying to describe in my work, and the distractions can influence what the viewer gets out of it. That also plays into my ability to capture what I want in m medium. That's something I'm definitely still working on. Whether it's in low light, high exposure, correct focus, or fast shutter, I'm still figuring it all out.

           Engage Persist:
EP 1: My work habit in photo is to just get done what you need to so you have time to learn and work at what you like. So getting all the posts and assignments sorted out on time, to give me more time to edit photos and work with my camera. Short term I just want to learn to express my experiences through my camera the way I see them. Its a skill that can be used the rest of my life, whether i make a career out of it or not.

           Envision
En 1: Overall my problem solving in this class has revolved around me experimenting with my camera. I get pretty frustrated when there's a moment I want to capture and in a certain way, and I cant. In reality the knowledge just comes with time, and improving through trial and error. So I've done my best to capture those moments and  continue to try.
En 2: A lot of what I used to capture were snapshots. Many of the pieces contain simple technique errors (ex..lines, symmetry, exposure, composition). Over this quarter I've learned the different techniques, and turning a snapshot into art. I'll say it over again, what I enjoy doing with my photography is capturing experiences and feelings of that moment, so using these techniques goes all across the board when making the piece.
En 3:
                 - This photo was one of the first days of summer. I didn't have a license, didn't really have a ride, and didn't need one. This summer no matter the time I rode everywhere. It made the journey's and places I went so much more worth it. There's something about experiencing and using something you've created. Although I didn't make my bike, I took myself places, and made my own adventures. This picture represents a whole summer, and thousands of experiences.
          Express:
Ex 1: A lot of my work is just my life. In a way it shows my personal ideas in that I prioritize experience over result. I try to capture a feeling or place in time with that certain photo. Over the years of my travel and experience I've developed my morals and let them evolve with my life. My work really doesn't impact many others other than myself, so the need to show through my photos is more just on experience than opinion.
Ex 2 :
No Fear, no limits
- I took this picture atop mt. A, trying to bring out the contrast and color. I also used radial balance to take the viewer from me to the sky.

 - Leading lines were used to take the readers eyes through the picture and to each bird.
- As the surfer walked out I tried to catch the morning light as it made long casting shadows from the rocks and people. I used the rule of thirds and a strong diagonal to take the reader from the rocks to the surfer.

- In this photo I used the contrast and complimentary colors to please the eye, and again leading lines to take the reader from the rain to the umbrella to the trees.

- In this piece I used the leading lines of my eyebrows, the focus point of my eyes, and the rule of thirds to crop this photo correctly.

In this picture the dark green trees contrast the over exposed moonlight, allowing the reader to not be overwhelmed by the light. The stars in the back also take the reader from side to side with the streaks.

- In this picture I used Symmetrical balance and the rule of thirds to make it simple, yet expressive of the moment.

The high contrast of red form a nice color, which is complimented by the shady unfocused green in the back.

- The leading line in this photo makes it symmetrical yet aesthetically pleasing.

I used high contrast and the rule of thirds to focus on the riders (Nathaniel).

- The leading lines of the fence take the viewer from the goal, to the bike, to the entrance. The bike also uses the rule of thirds in its focus point.

- I mainly usde the rule of thirds for the placement of the surfer...but also symmetrical balance and contrast.

- The rule of thirds for the rider....Contrast for the houses...and leading lines from the white water (crashed waves)

- I used the rule of thirds for the sun and tree placement, contrast and leading lines for the hilly valley, and Asymmetrical balance for the sun.
          Observe:
Ob 1: I now see more of the world through photography. The different lighting, settings, and moments that have the potential to be captured. I've always loved/ had an eye for those moments, but never the skills or equipment to do so. Having a camera allows me to explore than i ever have.
Ob 2: Being able to convey a message or experience through photography is so important. And so far, I believe I've achieved that. My looking at my experiences and seeing the visions that would capture that moment and feeling in time, is a skill I'll continue to work on.For example, when I see a sunset/ sunrise, I no longer just look directly at the sun and try to capture it. Instead of going blind, I try to see how the light bounces off the objects of the moments. Whether its the trees, the rocks, waves, or just people, whatever the moment brings. I try to see more than just what appears to be.
          Stretch + Explore:
SE 1: I pretty much got a camera at the beginning of this summer and have just been experimenting ever since. Everything I know about using a camera I've pretty much found from trial and error. With something like photography ( a developed skill), you just have to take photos and mess up to learn. There's really no other way. So keeping a "growth" mindset throughout that is important

SE 2: One risk is like I said failing over and over again with the settings of the camera. Also one thing i do need to save up for is a waterproof housing. Wading out in waist deep water with a naked camera is just such a great idea, so that's a risk i guess.

SE 3 : I almost never have a plan to what I photograph, I'd much rather have it that way. When I go places I bring my camera, and if the experience is worth capturing, ill do my best to do so. For me, you cant force art. You can plan it, but don't force it.

Understanding the art and design world
UAW: Photography has influenced history greatly by documenting and spreading the ideals of that time. It can be an expression for those who have no voice, and an expression for those who do.

UWA 3: Like I said my photography is based around my experiences. So its a way of documenting what I do and the people i do it with. So my interests are directly implemented in my photos. For example soccer and travel, surfing, snowboarding, stars, and places in my life.

UWA 4: Visual art expresses the more introvert side of me. The person who reflects and enjoys. Most of what people see are the extremes. The high energy, active, adhd side of me, and/ or the dead tired, falling asleep in class me. Yet when by myself I reflect and interpret, and photography has been a way to express that.  Although i am busy i do still spend a lot of time by myself, leaving a lot of time for reflecting. I travel and overall experience more than the average kid from York probably does, so that gives me a bit of a more broad view on society.
