AQUATIC

With the early dusk pink bouncing off the water, pulling out the cyans and turqious of the water, this really makes short sands beach out to seem like the tropics. The blur of the surfer catches the fast motion and fluidity of his turn, and the one iffy point of focus (the black tip and outline of the board) really pops with the lines and shapes leading the eye in. Again with the lighting and slow shutter the overall quality of the photo lacks, but its not what I was going for.

STEAM

- The air was cooler than the water, along with poor dusk lighting, so it made it quite challenging to get a well composed photo. What made the humid grainy aesthetic though was the condensation built up on the glass plate of the water housing. This flaring out certain areas and making a "poor" photo overall. But I was't going for that, instead the humid grain reminds me of times, mostly in the cold weather, when the vapor fills the immediate air with the water being significantly warmer. Although this photo may look warm, it was hovering around 40 degrees with wind chill to 30, and water temp around 50. So not your fun summer day to say the least.

Q1 Reflection

Art Two
Quarter One Reflection + Critique ------GARRETT LILLIE

Please complete all questions in the reflection in a new blog post. You will grade yourself in each section and turn in a different hard copy next week. .
Grade Yourself: 4)  Exceeds the Standard 3)  Meets the Standard 2)  Proceeding Towards the Standard 1)  Does Not Meet the Standard/No Evidence

Reflect
This whole process is a reflection.  I will be looking for evidence of your ability to reflect throughout:
Below are two of the REFLECT standards I will be looking for evidence of:
  • Re 3:  Interpret, Analyze and Describe | How do you interpret, analyze, and describe visual art and design in relation to personal, cultural, and historical contexts?
  • Re 4: Composition  | How do you analyze and explain the compositional components and choices you and other artists and designers make?

PART ONE
Reflect(Continued)                 Student Grade: _______
Re 5:  Personal Practice
  • Describe what your art practice looks like in and out of the studio?  How are you creative?  How do you create?  Think about some of the media we have covered in Art Two and please let me know about other art interests as well.
  • - My art practice is almost everything I do outside of the robotic life of school. I try to apply my perspectives on the world to everything I do, and do it in a way that will most effect others in a positive way. My art goes from Art class, to English class, to math class, to soccer, to social activity, and everything else in my life. Art is expression through whatever you choose, which could be numbers, words, materials, etc....
  • - I'm creative through my ability to learn. I'm not a crazy talented in a certain medium, but I think I'm creative in that im never afraid to fail, and I dont stick to a fixed mindset. If theres anything taught by playing in the US national teams soccer pool, its learning how to fail, and get over it. Thats why I'm creative.

Develop Craft                                     Student Grade: _______
DC 2:  Media Literacy
  • What media and techniques have you honed this quarter?
    • Pencil drawing, Sharpie, Salt paint/watercolor, oil pastel, wood carving, cardboard structure, film, photography, surf medium
  • What mediums are you still struggling with?
  • - Surf, in water, film and photo, photo perfection, paint
  • What mediums would you like to learn?
  • - Basic drawing and color expression

Engage + Persist            Student Grade: _______
EP 1: Work Habits/Best Practices
  • Do you display good work habits in Art Two? (time management, staying on task, organization, creating short-term and long-term goals, and having healthy and productive interactions with peers) If no, how will you do this next quarter?
- I always bring my work ethic to what I do. I think the one thing I could work on is my efficiency and focus when it comes to getting art done on time. But at the same time I feel like the most original people are almost always late.
EP 2: Portfolio Development
  • Describe a piece that reflects your personal choices, growth, and identity as an artist?
  • - My oil pastel work in showing the bleed down effects of big corporation were really strong. I first had to experiment for a few classes with how the oil pastel colors interact with each other, so I could bring out the silhouette expression of the corporate buildings. Its an issue I think is the biggest amongst society, since it controls society.

Envision                                        Student Grade: _______
En 1:  Problem Solving
  • How have you displayed evidence of problem solving and brainstorming in this class? Are you able to problem solve many solutions to a visual problem or design challenge? Show Evidence..
  • My problem solving would definitely come through my work in salt paintings. I spend multiple class periods and time outside of class trying to master the effects salt bring upon watercolor. I searched the web on might sky photos and salt watercolor techniques. I knew it would be hard because it was my idea, and not trying to copy the process of someone else. I wanted to express the night sky through these salt paints, but it didnt really work the way I wanted it to. I was then introduced to a similar effect of alcohol, and it allowed me to grow and make better pieces of work. Its most definitely my best expression of overcoming challenge.

Express                                     Student Grade: _______
Ex 2:  Composition
  • What elements and principles of design are evident in your work? Show evidence by uploading an image of your work and describing how you used each of the following:
    • Element of Art
    • Principle of Design
    • Balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial)
^RAW

- this shows how I went form a story board (design) to the progress on my work (Art through surf+photo).
- The picture themselves were captured the way I see the ocean. I used a water housing out in the water and had to do a lot of prep. But the view I wanted to share was the one from the sea. People always see the ocean from the shore. But the ocean only has its greatest impacts when you're among st it
- The pictures themselves are balanced through there color, composition, framing, and setting. The on of the surfer in the blue skies is unedited so it shows my raw shots.

Observe                                       Student Grade: _______
Ob 2:  Visual Literacy
  • How are you using visual literacy outside of the classroom to observe and better understand the world around you? Give an example.
- I use it everywhere. The world we know is all learned and observed perception, not fact. So if you're asking for how I use visual literacy you're asking how I see the world. AN example would be wavelengths, especially through the medium of water. In life we have to learn to adapt, and ride all the different wavelengths of life.
Ob 1: Artistic Seeing
  • How are you developing your artistic seeing?  Give an example of how you can look closely at subjects and objects and apply those observations to your work.  Can you see what the untrained eye may overlook:  negative space, small details, patterns, color, shape, etc.? Show Evidence.
I think I work best with movement, and expression through movemtent. When I'm on a soccer field I'm able to see detail without even thinking about it. Its another great form of art. The untrained eye, and body, would have no compitition against my learn and natural abilities. Not to be cocky or anything, but thats just the way it is. Thats one form of art I master in that others dont.

Stretch + Explore                                     Student Grade: _______    SE 1: Growth Mindset
  • Explain a time this quarter where you have learned and grown from failure.  How do you turn mistakes into a new point of departure?
- I've grown from failure in my work with my water housing. Learning to adapt and shoot while swimming, not being drowned by waves, avoiding surfers, yet still composing a decent image is something very hard to master. Each session I spend out in th water I'm more prepared and aware of what I need to do. So overall my work has become stronger.
SE 2: Risk Taking
  • Explain a time this quarter where you have taken a risk in your art practice.
A risk was the wood carving. If could have come out terrible as I had no real tools to carve wood, no proper wood to carve, and barely any wood carving experience. But I made it happen by taking it slow and using all the help i could get.
SE 3: Create Without Preconceived Plan
  • Explain a time this quarter that you created art without a preconceived plan.
Film and photo in the water. Each session is different, each wave is different, and how each person rides it is different. So you cant really plan any shot. You have to get out there, take in the atmosphere of the session ,and try your best to capture it. The beauty comes with that mastery of feeling and humbleness.

Understanding the Art and Design World                                                              Student Grade: _______
UAW 3:  Connections Across Disciplines
  • What are some interests you have in other disciplines?  Could these carry over into your art practice?  What connections would you like to explore?
Its hard to bring my camera into the sports world, given that i play in it, but at some point by the end of the year I want to capture a small glimpse of whats its like to play, travel, and be a part of something like that. THere are so many different emotional, situational, and environmental situations we're (my team) in, so itd be cool to capture that.
UAW 4:  Understanding and Connecting Through Art

  • How can you use visual art to better understand yourself, your peers, and society as a whole?
By doing more, failing more, trying more, expressing myself more, and learning what the world has to say about it, I'll grow. Its the only way to learn. Experiment, fail, and change my approach. That's why I do, and will continue to succeed.
