Art II Portfolio

ARTIST STATEMENT

My art is an expression of my reality. I do the work I do as a relief from my daily life. Often times, as a result, my energies and messages are brought out from my work. My intentions are never these large societal ideas or powerful messages, but I find by focusing on my technique, finding what looks good, and taking inspiration from whats around me, it is then when my best images/films/pieces are created. Most of my art is spent in the ocean. If you look directly, you can see the beautiful seascapes, my friends and fellow surfers in search of waves, and the deep colors and emotions brought out from the sea. If you look deeper, focusing more on the motion of the image, the relationship between each subject and their environment, and how it may relate to order, these interpretations often tap into my life.

Order in the chaos, that's my process. I think going into our lives with a predetermined purpose defeats the purpose of even living as a whole. Meaning, if you knew everything that was going to happen to you in your life, than you might as well have already lived it. The same applies to my art. I have a self, an energy in which I identify myself as. But when I go into my craft, when I start my work, I like to let my surroundings determine my outcome. How that is conveyed, really just depends on my ability to express through my technique, and to convey my energy (which is the idea I put into my work). For me, I've learned making order of chaos infers that you first immerse yourself in that chaos.....Such is trying to photograph the ocean. You just have to jump in. What comes out is really up to you.

My current work has been mostly film based. I'm really trying to experiment with motion, stocking up experiences through films instead of singular moments by the click of a shutter. My old art was very experimental. Any decent film sequence or click of a button was really just luck. What I bring out now is my expression. As I said, you can't really "try," instead just get out there and figure it out. Overtime my process will come. With that, you still need goals in mind, so I take inspiration from many adventure photographers and film-makers. To name a few, Chris Burkard, Morgan Maassen, Casey Neistat, and York's own Nick Lavecchia (https://www.instagram.com/nick_lavecchia/ )

In summary my work is ever changing, along with the ideas and emotions I look to express. But overall it's based around finding order in the Chaos, and for me that's making art from the Ocean.

A few snippets of my experiences.......
